2021 Racing Preview

In addition to our runners Snicket, Venetian Harbor, Bottle of Smoke, Zahra, and Nakoda, Highland Yard will have some new faces racing in 2021. We outline the likely runners here.

3 Year Olds in 2021

Lazaretto our homebred colt out of Mother Ruth is very near a start being trained by Saffie Joseph Jr in South Florida. He has been training forwardly and shown some speed in his works. A likely start will come at Oaklawn Park in late January.

Two other likely 3 year old starters are in training with OJ Jauregui in Northern California. Our Anchor Down colt, Tesoro (owned in partnership) has had a series of progressive works and should be ready to start once Golden Gate Fields re-opens post the Covid lockdown. We have best intentions for our Declaration of War filly, Ida Claire who has had a series off training set backs and is likely a few months from debut.

2 Year Olds in 2021

Highland Ghost, half-brother to Zahra is currently in pre-race course training and will join OJ in the spring to prep for a summer start in Northern California. We also a partnered on a soon-to-be-named Speightster filly who will also go to OJ.

We are particularly excited to see the progress of our multiple stakes winning mare Amaranth’s first foal by Twirling Candy. The colt is currently in pre-training in Florida and with any luck will race under the tutelage of Christophe Clement in New York. He has been coming to hand well considering his late foaling date.

On the international front, Sunset Shiraz who we purchased with Harvey Bloodstock at the Goffs Orby sale in September is in light training with Gavin Cromwell in Ireland. All accounts point to her progressing well and a spring debut at the Curragh is a possibility. Shiraz is very well bred and half to two stakes winners from a young mare. A video of her below.
