Tesoro in El Camino Real Derby
Well some times you just have to throw them in the deep end. Our 50% owned 3 year colt Tesoro, owned in partnership with Glen Road Racing et al, passed the finish line first on debut a few weeks ago. Although disqualified for interference, she showed some talent going a route of ground at Golden Gate that day.
Tesoro came back with a scintillating work last Friday working 5 furlongs in one minute flat, fastest of 30 workers by over a second. With Golden Gate’s signature race coming up we decided to give it a shot. No fewer than six SoCal invaders have signed on including Grade 1 placed Rombauer and multiple stakes placed filly Javanica. We expect improvement from our colt and have signed on Catalino Martinez for the mount. Catalino and trainer OJ Jauregui have had considerable success together and we are hopeful that will be the case Saturday.
The El Camino Real Derby ($100,000) is a Kentucky Derby points race and has been won by equine greats Sea Cadet (1991), Tabasco Cat (1994) and last year by Baffert trained Azul Coast. The winner also gets an automatic paid entry into the Preakness Stakes which is the second leg of the Triple Crown.
