Mixed Bag Review of 2022
Snicket, Snicket, Snicket. Thank goodness for our war-horse who started her year on January 1st and ran her final race on December 31st. Snicket won three races and was in the money nine times capturing $247,000 in purse earnings for the year. She will get one more start in late January and move to Brookdale Farm in Kentucky to begin her career as a broodmare. The highlight of her year was a 2nd place finish in the Union Avenue Handicap at Saratoga. We will miss her at the racetrack but look forward to seeing the babies of this statuesque daughter of Lemon Drop Kid who will finish her career exceeding $400,000 earnings.
Snicket at Saratoga as a 3 Year Old
Sunset Shiraz had an unfortunate setback early in the year and was unable to make her first of three starts until September. She showed her talent when placing 2nd in the 18 horse, listed Garnet Stakes in October. She will continue at the races in 2023 with an early season target in the Park Express Stakes at the end of March. From a lovely family of Stakes winners we are hopeful for a fruitful campaign.
Highland Ghost had an impressive year highlighted by two close up second place finishes in the Alcatraz Stakes (by a nose) and the Silly Sullivan Stakes. This home-bred colt has had a brief freshening and will return to action early in the year.
Highland Ghost
Highland Yard had other highlights in 2022 including wins by Ida Claire and Bottle of Smoke both of whom continue in training. All in all, 10 wins and 27 in the money performances from 54 starts for Highland Yard runners. This equates to a win strike rate of 19% and an in-the-money strike rate of 50% both well above industry averages. These numbers will be hard to replicate in 2023 without stable stalwart Snicket but we have some upcoming young horses to hit the track this year. Our next blog will highlight these exciting prospects.
